If you want to feel rich

Recommended Posts

It will take just 60 seconds to read this and change your thinking.

 A Short Story.

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room.

One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs.

His bed was next to the room's only window.

The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back.

The men talked for hours on end.

They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service,  where they had been on vacation.

Every afternoon, when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.

The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside.

The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake.Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color

and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance.

As the man by the window described all this in exquisite details, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine this picturesque scene.

One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by.

Although the other man could not hear the band -he could see it in his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.

Days, weeks and months passed. One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep.

She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.

As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.

Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window besides the bed.It faced a blank wall.

The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window.

The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall. She said, 'Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you.'

Epilogue

There is tremendous happiness in making others happy, despite our own situations.Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness when shared, is doubled. If you want to feel rich, just count all the things you have that money can't buy.

'Today is a gift, that is why it is called The Present

قصة قصيرة في غاية الروعة كما هو المعتاد في إختياراتك وهي بالطبع مفيدة جداً في التنمية البشرية ولكن لماذا لم تدرجها في قسم الأدب العالمي؟ رائع

أخدت بالك في أخر الفيلم لما أندي بيقول لريد i think it comes down to a simple choice, get busy living or get busy dying؟

Starfire: There are two wolves fighting in each man's heart. One is Love, the other is Hate.
Ghost: Which one wins?
Starfire: The one you feed the most.

I personally have three separate meanings for this quote and now that I do this blog thing, I may as well share them with you.

The first interpretation is quite literal in that you could take it to mean that one has two choices in life – you either get busy living or you get busy dying. But how does one get busy living or get busy dying? Well, to get busy living means to identify your goals in life and to work towards them. It doesn’t even have to be that broad – one could easily get busy living by setting goals for the day and achieving them. The point is that you don’t waste your time doing nothing and you are actually working towards an achievement you have set out for yourself. To get busy dying is quite the paradox because it requires you to do nothing. You have to be doing nothing productive in your life to get busy dying. Not setting yourself goals, not working towards anything, expecting everything to fall into your lap – those are signs of you getting busy to die.

The second interpretation could be that there are some points in life where you have to learn to let go. Many times in life, we come across situations where we encounter a situation – could be the way a person is or how something is being done – that we dislike and, because we care about that particular situation, we try really hard to make a difference. It could be the way a friend acts, it could be the way someone treats you, or it could be a relationship with someone that seems to be dying. You try really hard to make a difference for the better because you care. However, change isn’t something that always happens and you have to learn when to let go and get busy living with other things in your life rather than get busy dying with the lost cause you have been chasing. Once you believe you have honestly tried everything you can and nothing has worked, it’s time to move on to something else in your life. It isn’t giving up, it’s moving on. It’s getting busy living.

The last interpretation that came to my head was that maybe this quote was meant to inspire us to get rid of all the proverbial chains that bind us and prevent us from doing things. To get busy living would be to stop making up excuses as to why you cannot do something and, at the very least, try it to your absolute hardest. If you get busy dying, all you’re doing is telling yourself lies about why you can’t do something and in the end, you’re back to that paradox of not doing anything which leads to you being busy dying. However, it’s not always that simple. If you have tried your absolute hardest at something and you keep going at it despite no signs of any sort of positive result in sight, there’s no point in continuing on to do it. One has to know where to draw the line and move on to something else so that time isn’t wasted and that you are in fact getting yourself busy living your life instead of chasing a lost cause which will waste the precious little time you have on earth.

Though the interpretations are different in their own ways, the message is clear – it’s a call to action. Nothing gets done without effort and, whether we like it or not, we have to keep ourselves busy with one thing or the other. So the choice really is yours. Will you get busy living or will you get busy dying?
