1- Point out Five different cohesive ties in the following passage: (5 marks) Indicate the line number of each item you identify. Language is usually defined as an established system of symbols used for human communication. This system is easy to see in different branches of linguistics: phonetics, morphology, syntax and semantics. As you probably remember from previous courses, phonology studies the sounds and how they are produced. Morphology analyses word parts and how words inflect for tense, number, etc. and how certain words can be derived from other ones by adding certain prefixes and/or suffixes. As for syntax, or grammar, it comprises the study of how words combine to form phrases and how phrases combine to form longer sentences. Semantics studies word meaning and sentence meaning. However, the search for system at discourse level, i.e. beyond the sentence, is still evolving. 2-A- Each of the utterances below may carry out several illocutionary acts. For each utterance specify TWO possible illocutionary acts, and then name the speech act category: (3 marks) a. Did you read that sign? b. It's four o'clock. C. My daughter is sick. B- Do the following: (2marks) * Give 2 possible locutions to ask someone to open the window for you. * Give 2 possible perlocutions for the utterance "I lost my cell phone". 3- ln each of the following mini-dialogues, identify the possible implicature of what B says, and specify the conversational maxim flouted: (4 marks) 1. A. Would you like some coffee? B. I am fasting. 2. A. Are you sleeping? B. yes. 3. A: Sara moved to a new neighborhood. B: There were many schools near her old house. 4. A: Is your new teacher nice? B: Teachers are teachers! 4-Below are pairs of sentences. For the B utterances, do the following: (2 marks) • Decide which is more polite (Bl or B2), • Specify the politeness maxim that accounts for politeness in each case, and • Write a more polite alternative than Bl and B2. 1-A How do you like my new dress? Bl It's too tight on you. B2 Wasn't there a larger size? - 2-After a dinner party: A. Your rice tastes wonderful. Bl Everyone likes my cooking. B2 It's a simple recipe. 5- A friend of yours has just built a new house. Write a conversation including a compliment speech event complimenting your friend on this event. Indicate the beginning & end of the compliment speech event and analyze it fully. (4 marks)
