I – SYNTAX


I – Draw syntactic tree diagrams for the following sentences :

1 – The Chinese people respect the philosophers of the last century .

2 – The volcano in Iceland was destructive .

3 – The ancient Egyptians built their tombs on the western bank .

4 – I read the book that is about the Russian revolution .


II – Define the main constituents in the following sentences ( e.g. NP , VP , PP ) and the function of each constituent and state the type of each verb .

1 – The employees e-mailed the administration their applications .

2 – The man to whom I was talking is a billionaire .


III – Give an example for the following in a sentence of your own .

1 – Two different tests of NP .

2 – Two different types of VP and explain fully .


II – Semantics


I – Disambiguate the following sentences if possible ( one of them is not ambiguous ) and state the type of ambiguity .

1 – Visiting supervisors are boring .

2 – They moved the table by the door .

3 – They decided on the bus .


II – Explain why the following sentences is grammatically correct but semantically incorrect .

" The high boy ate the delicious books "


III – Explain the semantic relationship between the following pairs ( i.e antonyms , synonyms …… ) then determine its relationship .

a - cab / taxi

b – toxic / poisonous

c – tight / miser

d – vehicle / car / train / lorry


IV – State two possible speech acts providing their contexts for the following utterance .

" Is this air conditioner working ? "


V – Choose the best answer and explain your choice fully .

" Have a seat "

السلام عليكم عبد الرحمن

اولا شكرا جزيلا علي مجهودك في وضع آخر الامتحانات علي المنتدي ولكن ارجو ان تنتبه أخي الي مكان وضعها جميعا

فمادة علم اللغة والتراكيب تخص الترم السادس وليس الاول والثاني والامتحان الخاص بتلك المادة سبقك في وضعه أحد الزملاء لذلك يتوجب عليك وحتي لا تكون مضيعة للوقت ان تتاكد ان ما تقوم بوضعه غير مكرر وان يكون في المكان المخصص له وهو المكتبة الدراسية لكلية الاداب.

شكرا ً على الإيضاح , فأنا في السنة الأولى وامتحنت تسع مواد في يوليو 2010 ولم يتبقى لدي سوى مادتين سأرفعهما لاحقا إن شاء الله وتمنياتي للجميع بالنجاح والتوفيق ....
